Former NBA player and activist Royce White speaks out for Uyghurs in Xinjiang facing genocide by the Communist Party-led Chinese government.
When athletes and sports champions have attempted to speak up about various human rights movements, be it Black Lives Matter or the Hong Kong pro-democracy movement, they have been met with backlash, not from audiences, but from sports associations and, at times, governments. For former NBA player Royce White, his expression of support was met with silence.
At a televised event in July, White held up a T-shirt reading, "Free the Uyghurs." On social media, the sports star wrote, "When you know a moment like this should be going viral but instead you get crickets from media outlets… that’s when you know you’re doing it the right way." He added, "When it doesn’t suit anybody to talk about justice and freedom, that’s when you should talk about it." read more
