Munich - Uighur communities in 25 countries around the world will elect their delegates today, Sunday, to the 7th General Assembly of the World Uighur Congress (WUC). This is part of the triennial general elections to elect new WUC representatives, including board members and the president. A total of 200 delegates are to be elected from 25 countries.
Since the first week of July, when the nomination process began, any Uigure over the age of 18 who met the criteria could run for election. This Sunday, each country will democratically elect several delegates who will convene at the WUC's 7th General Assembly later this year. During the General Assembly, delegates will participate in elections for the 16 different committees and for membership on the Board of Directors, including the WUC Chair.
Since democratic processes for the Uyghur people in East Turkestan have been completely eroded by the Chinese government, the WUC attaches great importance to the ability of Uyghur diaspora communities worldwide to democratically elect the individuals who will publicly represent their legitimate interests, including to national governments and international institutions. read more
