In Chinese "re-education camps" hundreds of thousands of people are tortured, raped, humiliated and killed. An escaped woman tells her story.
Sayragul Sauytbay is a Muslim of Kazakh descent. That alone was enough for the Chinese authorities to lock the teacher up in an internment camp. To put a black sack over her head and practically ship her out of her bedroom to a so-called re-education center. To a camp where forced sterilization, torture and human experimentation are the order of the day. According to various sources, between 1.5 and three million people in China, most of them Uyghurs, have suffered the same fate as Sayragul Sauytbay.
This was also the experience of Sayragul Sauytbay, who after some hesitation agreed to tell the Israeli daily Haaretz about the suffering she herself experienced in the camp. She never found out exactly which camp she was in. Nor did she find out why she was allowed to leave after about a year.
