EU states are preparing sanctions against China because of the internment of Muslim Uyghurs. This was confirmed by several EU diplomats to the German Press Agency in Brussels on Friday, the agency writes. The measures, they said, are part of a package of sanctions intended to hit those responsible for serious human rights violations from several regions of the world. Work on it is expected to be completed by the March 22 meeting of EU foreign ministers. It would be the first EU sanctions against China since the Tiananmen Square massacre in 1989.
According to information from EU circles, representatives of the EU states agreed on the overall package on Thursday, although further steps are still necessary for the conclusion. Accordingly, the package provides for the freezing of accounts and other financial assets of the chinese individuals in the EU.
