Germany has so far not labeled China's human rights crimes in the Uyghur province of Xinjiang as genocide. But pressure is mounting in the Bundestag. Companies could even be forced by law to stop their activities there.

Countries pay a price for their criticism of Beijing. And because it is high, only a few countries have so far criticized the human rights crimes in Xinjiang in no uncertain terms. The parliaments of Canada, the Netherlands and the United Kingdom are exceptions. They have branded the crimes in Xinjiang as genocide. U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken also spoke of genocide, but made this known as his personal opinion.

There are no comparable statements from Germany. Berlin is holding back from open criticism of Beijing - out of consideration for its own dependence. But now there is movement in the debate. read more
