In a new report, the human rights organization Amnesty International (AI) denounces systematic persecution and repression of Muslims by the Chinese authorities. In the Xinjiang Autonomous Uyghur Region, hundreds of thousands of members of Muslim minorities have been imprisoned and tortured in recent years, and millions of Muslims are being systematically monitored.
For the report "As if we were enemies in a war", which was presented in Berlin on Thursday, the authors talked to more than 50 former camp inmates about their detention conditions. AI speaks of crimes against humanity and calls on China to close all internment camps.
The 160-page report describes systematic attempts by Chinese authorities to eradicate religious traditions, cultural practices and local languages of Muslim ethnic groups in the region. According to the report, Uyghurs, Kazakhs, Kyrgyz, Uzbeks and Hui Chinese are affected. China's authorities have established a reign of terror in the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region, according to AI's International Secretary General Agnes Callamard. read more
