In London, an independent panel has begun hearing from members of China's Muslim Uyghur minority.
Witnesses told the so-called "Uyghur Tribunal" of killings and torture, as well as gang rapes and forced sterilizations of women in camps in northwest China's Xinjiang province. The panel of lawyers and other experts plans to publish a report on the human rights violations in December. The tribunal is not affiliated with any government and was established at the request of the largest exiled Uighur organization, the World Uighur Congress. China opposes the event and has imposed sanctions on those involved.
According to human rights organizations, at least one million members of the Uyghur and other Muslim minorities are imprisoned in detention camps in Xinjiang. There, they are forced to give up their religion, culture and language and are mistreated. The USA therefore accuses Beijing of genocide. According to the Chinese, these are training programs against extremism.
