Following the report on systematic human rights violations in Xinjiang, UN Secretary-General Guterres has called on China to implement the recommendations. The rights of the Uyghurs must be respected.
UN Secretary-General António Guterres has called on China to take into account recommendations in a UN report on the situation of Uighurs in the Xinjiang region. The report by former UN Human Rights Commissioner Michelle Bachelet "confirms what the secretary-general has been saying for some time on Xinjiang, namely that human rights must be respected and that the Uighur community must be respected," Guterres' spokesman Stéphane Dujarric said.
Dujarric added that Guterres was "concerned" by what he read in the 49-page report. The secretary-general said he very much hopes the Chinese government will take into account the recommendations of the U.N. human rights office. The report calls on the Chinese government to "take immediate action to release all those arbitrarily detained in the region." It also urges Beijing to "urgently repeal all discriminatory laws, policies and practices" that disadvantage the minority Uighurs. read more
